Romsey Ladies Trophy Winners!

Romsey (2) vs Hamble (1)

Scorers: Jenner, Edwards

Romsey ladies became Hampshire Trophy Champions with a last minute goal to beat Hamble in the final.

This second piece of silverware tops an exceptional season for the ladies who finished the league season as unbeaten champions of Div 2.

In the heat of the bank holiday sun, Romsey started brightly, but it was Hamble who took the lead from a quick counter, winning a short corner and resulting in a goal.

Romsey knuckled down and built up their attacks, drilling the ball around patiently in the final third to create an opening.

Eventually Romsey were rewarded with a short corner, which after a few passess to cut out the defence, Erica Jenner found herself in space, and flicked into the net to equalise.

Half time gave both sides a chance to take on water in the blistering heat. Romsey dominated the second half, with the lions share of possession, but struggled to make the final decisive shot.

Hamble kept battling and won a penalty flick late in the game. Keeper Selena Cox kept her cool, saving confidently to keep Romsey in the game.

The supporters held their breath as the tension mounted. Romsey continued pressing the Hamble defence, and won several short corners. Attempts came close, but Hamble were resilient at the back.

On the final whistle, Romsey won another short corner, and the last opportunity to seal victory in open play. Whilst the initial shot was blocked, Amy Edwards was quick to react and got the final decisive touch to score the winner and put Romsey’s name on the trophy.

Captain Sophie Riley was delighted, “every single player worked so hard, it was an honour to captain such a fab team”.

Romsey ladies would like to thank all the wonderful supporters who came and cheered us on, and coach Dave Miles, for his enormous contribution and support to the ladies teams.
