Romsey Mens 2nd XI 3 – 0 Southampton

Romsey Mens 2nd XI Continued their winning run with a workmanlike 3-0 victory away to Southampton, with goals from Colin Harwood and Martin Simpson-Scott, who made an immediate impression on his first game back from a long injury lay off.

Harwood SONY DSCopened the scoring with a neat finish from 8 yards out after some good approach work from Chris Arnold. Romsey found good space in the attacking third and continued to sustain pressure through the half, and gained their reward for all the good work before half time.

Man of the match Jim East picked out Simpson-Scott in the D with a trademark bullet pass. Simpson-Scott saw his initial low shot well saved, so launched the rebound high over the stranded keeper and into the roof of the net.

The home side came back much stronger in the second period but were unable to get change out of Stuart Robertson, Jim Ponsford, Ben Parker and Dave Andrews in the Romsey back line.

Then, drama ! Jacob Arney broke into the Southampton D through a bad stick tackle, but retained possession and thanks to the umpire playing good advantage fired in a low shot. The home keeper saved at full stretch but left the ball feet from the goal line, only for a home defender to clear the ball with the back of his stick. JAE3

A penalty stroke was correctly awarded, which prompted the Southampton Umpire to initiate an immediate and animated conference which lasted several minutes after which a penalty corner was instead awarded. Whether the Romsey players perceived an injustice, they were able to keep their composure and execute a flawless penalty corner routine, Simpson-Scott Smashing a venomous strike past the hapless home defence.

Romsey rise to second in Snows Group Hampshire Div 6, with just Havant to play before the Christmas break.
