Ladies 1s (0) vs (6) Fareham 1s

Romsey were geared up for their last game of the season against promotion favourites Fareham.

The visitors started strong with lots of quick passes which were well cut out by Emily Bradshaw and Becky Hutchins in the middle. But Fareham soon broke the deadlock with a well struck short corner.

Romsey picked up their game and started playing more direct passes with nice connecting play between Kate Moss and Amy Edwards, but Fareham were quick on the break, and doubled their lead through another well worked short corner.

Romsey were not discouraged and fought hard to create scoring opportunities. Lead by Edwards and Rosie Bishop, the attacking line put pressure on Fareham’s defence forcing a mistake. Moss dispatched a beautiful pass to get Bradshaw in behind the defence and along the baseline. The ball was slipped back to the on-rushing Hutchins who was tantalisingly close to connecting.

Romsey’s defence worked tirelessly throughout, with captain Liz Forbes, and tackling queen Jane Palmer blocking shots and making crucial tackles in the D. Wing backs Gemma Simpson and Emily Slade provided the outlets, and hampered the Fareham attacks down the wings.

Fareham kept at it and struck back with slick passing around the Romsey D, and causing an unfortunate deflection goal-ward from a Romsey stick to make it 3-0 at half time.

Fareham, with the league title in sight, kept hunting for more goals. Their fun was spoilt somewhat by the fantastic Selena Cox in the Romsey goal. Cox put on a performance that reiterated her quality between the posts, as she made diving saves, and reacted quickly to thwart the Fareham forwards from having it all their own way.

Romsey remained well organised after the break, and looked to create more chances of their own. Quick interplay up the right hand side between Erica Jenner and Kate Olingschlaeger lead to Romsey winning their first and only short corner. Romsey set up for the shot, but Fareham were out fast, defending well, despite Sinead O’Hara’s efforts on the rebound.

Player of the match, Selena Cox, continued to make Fareham work for their goals, but eventually, they found a way through to increase their lead.

Romsey continued to work hard looking for the mistake. Late in the game, Olingschlaeger poached the ball of the Fareham defender to set herself up with a potential one on one with the keeper. The visiting keeper, not to be outdone by the outstanding Cox, was alert to the danger and made a good save to deny Romsey.

Romsey Captain Liz Forbes commented, “despite the scoreline today, we’ve done an excellent job this season. Our first year in Division 1 and we’ve finished a comfortable 7th. I’ve very proud of the team. We’ve really stepped up to the challenge and proven ourselves worthy of this league.”
