Friday 6th of June saw the annual Haslemere Hockey tour commence. Ten of the Romsey ladies (Sea monkey’s as we are known on tour) made the journey to Haslemere’s tournament also known as Chiltsfest. It was a tournament set up in memory of ‘Chilts’ a member of Haslemere Hockey Club who sadly lost his battle with cancer two years ago.

We have been going since 2012 and each year there is a different theme, this year it was kids TV so there was a lot of room for interpretation. Our playing shirts were real life Art Attacks and on the Friday night we decorated and then wore them as well as to play hockey in on Saturday and Sunday, so as you can imagine at the end of the weekend we didn’t smell too fresh. Also on the Friday night Haslemere provided their legendary hog roast and put on a disco, which is always, a great ice breaker!

The Saturday night is ‘the big one’ as far as dressing up goes, this year we went as famous kids TV pairs so we had Sooty and Sweep, Miss Piggy and Kermit, Bill and Ben to name but a few – see if you can recognise any others from our selfie picture! As you can tell they are all ‘hand-made’ but we always take great pride in the process and commitment for the cause is essential; this year we had plant pots stapled into legs! The Saturday night always includes an epic grill provided by outside caterers and a brilliant live band.

On Sunday we finish playing hockey, reminisce about what an amazing weekend it has been and we pack up camp. Everyone heads to the clubhouse for the presentation of ‘Chiltsfest Festival Team’ of the tournament, which is awarded to the team with the biggest team spirit and (thankfully) doesn’t necessarily take into account hockey prowess! We were absolutely delighted to be awarded this for the second time in three years. It was a true mark to the spirit that our team had, we were a mixed bunch of players (some not even Romsey!) and this turned out to be the recipe to a truly fantastic weekend and one, which I know I will never forget.

Please when you get an email in a few months or so entitled ‘Haslemere Hockey Tour’, read it and give it serious thought and come along. It is a brilliant way to get to know other people in the club and to get creative with your dress up skills!
