Honours were shared in a hard fought game, which Romsey will feel they could have won, but would have been very disappointed to have picked up no points from at all.

A strong Romsey side went on the offensive from the off, Neil Strong and Colin Harwood had a couple of half chances, and with James Croft-Baker and Tim Bailey supporting the front two it seemed only a matter of time before Romsey would open the scoring.

Then with a long pass from Basingstoke that cut through the Romsey midfield, they found themselves in the Romsey circle and squared a pass to steer the ball past Adam Sankey on goal.

Rob Kerr and Jim Ponsford in centre of Romsey midfield rebuilt some Romsey moves, but an aerial pass from skipper Stuart Robertson found Sam Barcia on the right, he powered towards the circle and his cross missed Carl Hendy at the far post, hitting the post and bouncing out to Neil Strong to firmly shoot for the equaliser.

Romsey were undone again in a similar fashion to Basinstoke’s first goal when an unmarked forward picked up a loose ball and shot past Sankey, and Romsey were lucky not to go in 3-1 down at halftime, when Basingstoke were in the process of scoring the half time whistle went just before the ball found its way to the backboards, a resultant penalty corner was cleared.

Dave Andrews and Ian Wilson in defence kept Basingstoke at bay in the second half and that solid base meant Romsey could search for the equliaser. James Boggis and James Fraser made in roads to the Basignstoke defence, and Boggis was unlucky at the far post and Hendy and Barcia had half chances.

Tim Bailey saw his penalty corner strike plucked away from the top corner by the Basingstoke keeper and then a few minutes later he played in Harwood whose diving shot just went the wrong side of the post.

Finally Sam Barcia played in Rob Kerr in the centre and he powered towards the goal and played in Strong who glanced the ball with one touch in for the well deserved equaliser.

A 2-2 draw was the final score, both teams happy that they hadn’t lost.
