Romsey vs Winchester

Sunday 8-Nov-15, HCS

Romsey’s U12 boys fight back from being 0-1 down to win 3-1 for their first win of the 2015/16 season.

Following a promising performance against Gosport last Sunday, Romsey’s U12 boys faced Winchester at home on a very mild but damp November morning.  The team was bolstered by three U10 boys playing their first match on a full sized pitch – Jack Meehan, Luke Walter and William Rossdale.

Winchester snatched the lead (1-0) in the first period following chances for both teams.  Romsey started the second period with all three U10 boys on the pitch and playing like seasoned U12s with some excellent passing, running and stick skills.  Romsey began to ratchet up the pressure, playing with more width and surging forward in numbers.  This left some gaps which Winchester tried to exploit, but Romsey’s defensive line up of Toby Hamblin, George Coltart and William Payne provided excellent protection for keeper Ollie O’Hara.  The pressure was finally rewarded when James Fuller converted a short corner to equalise (1-1).

Romsey started the third and final period with growing confidence following some shrewd tactical adjustments by Coach Charlotte.  Ben Harris, Elliot Colyer and William Ritchie combined well in midfield, linking up with the forward trio of Charlie Westmacott, Jack Meehan and Ben Lockey.  The boys took a well deserved lead (2-1) following a goal by Charlie Westmacott, which was followed up shortly by another from Charlie (3-1).  The final 10 minutes of the third period saw an increasingly dominant Romsey with any Winchester counter-attacks quickly being snuffed out.  The match finished off with two short corners to Winchester which were repelled, giving Romsey a well earned victory – their first of the 2015/16 season.

Player of the match went to George Coltart for his excellent defensive tackling and reading of the game.
