L3 Match Reports

Romsey 3s  (2-1)  Eastleigh 2s

scorer Gladstone 2

The game started slowly and Romsey conceded an early goal. However as the game settled down the defence held it together and prevented Eastleigh from adding to their lead.  Star player Izzy Manuel who defended exceptionally well after a series of short corners along with Hillary, Ellen, Lisa and Steph. Goalkeeper Alice Dyer also made  several good saves in the first half.

Towards the end of the 1st half Rosie Middleton made an excellent run down the left wing to the back line,  pushing a prefect cross to Cat Gladstone who equalised to make it 1-1 at half time.

After a stern team talk and slight midfield re-shuffle at half time Romsey upped their game and were attacking well.  Jess Jones and Tasha Isaac played to their strengths with some great passing and communication up through the middle and Romsey came close to scoring several times.

With 2 minutes to go Lisa Morgan made a brilliant pass from a long corner to Rosie, who then skirted around the Eastleigh defenders making a smashing cross to Cat who scored again!

The 3 subs on the sideline went wild and kept cheering all the way to the final whistle.

A great result again which makes it 5 wins from 5 matches!

Romsey 3  V Havant 4

3-1

Not the best start with some poor marking and all a big sluggish from the whistle, but after Havant got a goal early on we stepped up our game, with some good passing and Rosie Middleton working hard on the wing.

We had a few chances up front with Captain Cat Gladstone and Ruth Manners pushing Havant defence but they prevented any goals.  With encouragement from the sidelines the team started to gel and with good communication got some great runs and a great moment  when Pam Mew and Ruth worked  together to push through Havant players but Romsey remained 1-0 down half time.

Feeling positive going into 2nd half Pam equalised after only 2 Mins!  Shortly after she had us all cracked up trying to leapfrog  over a player she was about to collide with!

16 mins in to the second half after a flurry of yellow tops, Captain Cat scored to give Romsey the lead.

We continued strong  in particular star player Ellen Saunders, who made some great tackles and drove up the sidelines  with Izzy Manuel. In the last few mins Sarah Macleod blasted a shot into goal making  the final score 3-1.

A special mention goes to Romsey’s dogged defence of Hilary Andrews, Anne Harding, Steph Andrews, Lisa Morgan and Ellen Saunders, plus Goalkeeper Alice Dyer, who went through the whole match without conceding a single short corner.

Geared up for a great game on the back of last week’s win, the ladies 3s were feeling positive and started strong with some great passing among the midfield and forwards. However, a strong, young Southampton midfield managed to get through the Romsey defence and score past goalkeeper Alice Dyer to take an early lead. Shortly, after Sarah MacLeod’s great run, passing to Cat Gladstone on the left who struck diagonally for the waiting Parminder Mew to calmly pop the ball past the Southampton keeper to equalize.

Romsey adjusted formation in the midfield for the second half and dominated, with Tash Isaac and Jess Jones dominating. They deservedly took the lead when Parminder‘s pass allowed Julie Evans to turn and shoot into the corner of the goal. Romsey’s defence was unbeatable.

In the last few minutes newbie Tabby looked to have scored only to have it disallowed because it skimmed her foot!!

Well deserved 2-1 win against a friendly and fairly evenly matched team.

Romsey Ladies 3s (6) vs (0) Yateley 4s

Scorers: Gibson 3, McLeod 2, Gladstone

The Ladies 3s finished their season in style with a comfortable win over Yateley, leaving them 8th in the league and well clear of relegation.

Romsey dominated from the start of the game, with midfielders Sarah McLeod and Megan Bowles playing particularly well. Elaine Gibson opened the scoring with a powerful strike from the edge of the D, before Sarah McLeod added a second from close range. Shortly before half time Romsey scored again when Gibson provided a perfect cross for Cat Gladstone to hit a first-time shot from the top of the D.

The second half followed a similar pattern. Elaine Gibson added two further goals to complete a well-deserved hat-trick, but the best goal of the game came from Sarah McLeod, who picked the ball up in the centre circle and ran through the Yateley defence to score a brilliant goal late in the game.

This was a solid season first season on Division 5 and the team will be hoping for more of the same next year.

Ladies 3s (5) vs (6) Havant 4s

Scorers: Gladstone 5!!

Romsey ladies 3rd XI traveled to Havant with a slightly depleted team of only 10 players.

Romsey made lots of good passing to begin with but it was the home side who scored first. Romsey reacted straight away with Cat Gladstone nabbing an equaliser with a great goal.

Rosie, playing as stand-in goalie, made some great saves against some hard strikes, but by half time it was 3-3.

Half time saw Izzy jump into the goal kit for the second half and both teams battled up and down the pitch.

During the last quarter the Romsey players were getting very tired and Havant managed to get 6-3 up.

To their credit, the visitors from Romsey kept battling. Some great tackling from Elaine Gibson and Rosie in the middle with Megan supporting on the right. Romsey managed to find another couple of goals, taken by the on target Gladstone. Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite enough for a point, but a very impressively fought game ended Havant 6, Romsey 5.

Romsey Ladies 3s (0) vs (0) IBM Nomads

Romsey ladies 3s hosted IBM Nomads in a key match as the teams were only separated by 3 points in the league table. A win for Romsey would see them move up to 6th place.

Romsey were slow to start, allowing the visitors to dominate the early stages of the game. Young goalkeeper, Alice, put in a couple of key saves and the defence worked hard to clear the ball out of the D.

An early short corner for Romsey saw a narrow miss by Sarah Mcleod, from a lovely strike by Julie Evans from the top of the D. Romsey continued to press hard throughout the first half, seeing several more near misses.

In the second half, Romsey played much better passing hockey, with Issy and Megan, who shared player of the match, working tirelessly to drive the ball up the pitch and into the D.

On several occasions, captain Cat Gladstone produced some lovely crosses, but there was no one on the far post to tip the ball in; definitely something to work on.

As IBM started to tire, Romsey had more chances at goal, but just could not find the back of the net. The final score was a frustrating 0-0.

City of Portsmouth (2) vs (2) Romsey Ladies 3s

Scorer: Gibson 2

The ladies 3s headed for Portsmouth in fairly pleasant weather, however as the whistle blew for push back so did the wind and rain!!!

Romsey started well with some lovely passing in the midfield enabling the forwards to carry the ball on. After winning a short corner, Cat Gladstone delivered a powerful shot which Elaine Gibson sent past the Portsmouth keeper.

Unfortunately the home side retaliated by equalizing soon afterwards.

Everyone continued valiantly despite the stormy weather. Cat Gladstone and Elaine Gibson again took possesion in the final quarter where Gladstone passed to Gibson who took it across the D and scored.

Again, Portsmouth came back and matched the Romsey efforts.

Shortly into the second half the umpires decided the adverse weather was making play dangerous and called an end to the game, resulting in a fair result of honours even.

Romsey Ladies 3s (4) vs (2) Havant 4s

Scorers: Gibson 3, Issacs

A shaky start came good when the ladies thirds took on Havant in their last match before Christmas.

Confidence was regained early on after Elaine Gibson scored a goal from a short corner, however Havant capitalised on an empty defence and equalised quickly.

Undeterred, the home team kept a positive outlook and a collaborative approach led to further goals. Linking play from defender Lisa Morgan allowed Gibson to score another before half time.

Second half saw a change of goalie. Unfortunately an early break allowed a Havant goal. Romsey kept their heads high, remembering the first half goals, and were able to regain and the lead through two further converted short corners, another from Gibson and one by captain Tasha Isaac, who fought valiantly throughout, gaining star player for this and superb earlier efforts.

Ladies 3s (2) vs (2) Petersfield 2s

Scorers: Gibson

A chilly late afternoon push-back saw the Ladies thirds take on 3rd in the table Petersfield.

After a difficult first fifteen mins which saw the visitors pinned in their own half, Romsey were able to break forward with some excellent interplay amongst the midfield.

The first half saw an good goal from Elaine Gibson with a powerful shot from the top of the D leaving the team jubilant for half time.

In the second half the weather changed leaving a slippery pitch giving way to a few casualties. Early on player of the match, Gibson snuck another goal slipping the ball through the keepers legs to double the lead.

As the game advanced so did Petersfield managing to capitalise on a few lucky breaks. Two unfortunate goals were scored late on bringing the final score to 2-2.

Romsey left feeling pleased with the result and the emerging team cohesion.

Romsey Ladies 3s (0) vs (1) New Forest 2s

Having suffered a pre season friendly defeat against the Lymington based team, Romsey were keen to start the match positively and immediately took the game to the home team. Romsey put the pressure on from the whistle and kept the ball in their attacking half during the first 20 minutes of the match.

Having split the New Forest defence through a combination of precision passes and teamwork, some early opportunities to score were well saved by the home keeper.

New Forest continued to defend well and having taken control of the ball managed to score a goal towards the end of the first half, despite some excellent marking and defence by Romsey players Tasha Isaac, Ruth Manners and Hilary Andrews.

The second half was very evenly matched, despite Romsey attacking into some very strong headwinds. Romsey once again played some great attacking hockey but were unable to get the ball past the Forest keeper.

Some dynamic saves by Claire Godfrey in goal ensured that Romsey came away from the match with a 1-0 defeat, having played some of their best hockey so far this season.

Star player award went to Hilary Andrews for her excellent goalkeeping the first half and solid outfield play in the second.
