Ladies 1s (0) vs (0) Trojans 2s

Romsey Ladies 1s put out a spirited performance against top of the table Trojans 2s, cheered on by an incredibly supportive crowd.

The unbeaten Trojans side looked strong from the start, putting Romsey under pressure from the off. A depleted Romsey side, missing several players and with no substitutes, improvised admirably, working incredibly hard for each other. Extra credit has to go to Emma Beeching and Tracy Nicol, who were pulled up from the ladies 2s and ran their socks off for seventy minutes.

Trojans pressed Romsey right back, but after 10 minutes the visitors hadn’t found a clear shot at goal, testament to Romsey’s resolve. The home side were covering each other, with midfielders busying themselves to upset Trojans advances, and defenders putting in the tackles and frustrating the visitors.

The first real danger to the Romsey goal came after a powerful shot from the top of the D was met by a defenders stick, launching the ball up in the air and towards the top corner. Stand-in goal keeper, Emily Bradshaw, leaping at full stretch, managed to make a fingertip save, pushing the ball just clear of the goal. The crowd, who were incredibly supportive throughout, oooed and applauded generously.

Trojans won several short corners in the first half. But they couldn’t convert, as Liz Forbes and Emily Slade were quick and strong off the line, affording the strikers no time. Out of half a dozen short corners, Trojans only managed 1 shot on target, saved comfortably by player of the match Bradshaw.

Hogan-Lloyd was incredible as she intercepted and closed down any danger in the D. She worked well with the tackling queen Jane Palmer, to ensure that by the end of the 1st half, Trojans had only managed a couple of un-contested shots at goal.

The second half saw Trojans change their tactics to try and get through Romsey another way. Initially buoyed by the extra room, Romsey found energy to attack, with Gemma Simpson and Becky Hutchins linking up in the middle and releasing Kate Olingschlaeger up the wing. Romsey held a few presses around the Trojans D but couldn’t find a way in this time.

The tactical change had made the difference and 12minutes into the 2nd half, it presented Trojans with the space they were craving. They countered swiftly, and with a well worked move, grabbed the lead.

Although disappointed, Romsey held their heads high and kept going. Despite further pressure from Trojans, Romsey kept the work rate up, defending together and keeping their heads. A beautiful moment of gutsy sibling rivalry came when Romsey’s Emily Slade timed her tackle to perfection to halt her twin Jo Slade attacking for Trojans. This was the first time the sisters had met each other on the hockey pitch and the crowd knew the stakes, applauding the moment and encouraging both Slades in equal measure.

Romsey almost found an equaliser, as the midfield got some reward for their hard work. Hutchins worked the ball out to Beeching down the wing, releasing Rosie Bishop who took her opportunity to badger the defence. Bishop entered the visitors final third at pace and her skill on the ball forced the defence to fowl. Romsey’s one and only short corner of the match was awarded. The ball was worked around the D finally presenting Simpson with a chance at the post. It was only the quality of the Trojans goalkeeper making a very good save, that foiled Romsey.

Against a team that have been thrashing others in the league, this was a fantastic effort from the 11 players of Romsey, who worked incredibly hard and made it difficult for the league leaders. Stand-in captain Emily Slade commented “I’m so proud of everyone. We worked tireless for each other, and what an amazing scoreline against a very well organised Trojans team.”

Romsey ladies 1s would like to thank all their friends, family and club-mates who provided continuous support and encouragement from the sidelines. It was fantastic to hear so much support and we hope we made you proud!
