HAMPSHIRE TROPHY QUARTER FINALS

Winchester (2) vs Romsey (4)

Scorers: Olingschlaeger, Hutchins 3

Romsey ladies go through to the semi-finals of the Hampshire Womens Trophy, as they beat Winchester in the quarter finals this weekend.

With both teams battling the unpredictably bumpy pitch at Bar End, it was Romsey who took the lead after an attack up the right hand side with Becky Hutchins and Amy Welch working the ball down the right. Emily Bradshaw fed the ball into the D for Kate Olingschlaeger to latch on to. The spritely Winchester keeper was out incredibly fast to block the shot, but Romsey kept the ball in the danger area, with determined work from Welch and Karen Robinson, who eventually found the lurking Olingschlaeger in a bit of space to thump the ball home.

Winchester’s speed of attack was impressive, but Romsey’s defense were more than up to the task with goalkeeper Hannah Longley reletively untroubled as captain Sophie Riley controlled the back line, ablely assisted by dependable Jane Palmer, Tracy Nicoll and the impressive calm Caitlin Hogan-Lloyd.

Romsey doubled their lead in the second half after some beautiful passing around the midfield, wiht Erica Jenner switching the ball from right to left to set off a classic Emma Beeching run up the wing. The ball was laid into Becky Hutchins who wrong footed the goalkeeper and finished with a diving shot to make it 2-0.

Winchester came back quickly 3mins later when they unleashed a 1-in-a-million shot, struck sweetly into the top right corner on the volley after a poorly executed short corner routine.

Romsey stuck to the task, unphased by this freak goal, attacking once more with the pace of Amy Welch up the right wing. The cross went in and Hutchins was there to dish out more misery to the Winchester defence and return Romsey’s two goal lead.

Romsey added a fourth after a fantastic run from Beeching, who stormed past a couple of players, checked back and released player of the match Hutchins in the D to grab a well deserved hatrick.

Winchester to their credit continued to work hard, and as the minutes ticked by pushed more players up to try and claw back the game. They got their second very late inthe game, but it was not enough to disturb Romsey who play Aldershot and Farnham in the semis in April.
