The boys under 12’s hockey tournament report by Thomas Croft-Baker
The Romsey under 12 hockey players travelled to Brockenhurst College for the Hampshire In2 Hockey 7s tournament. We were expecting some tough competition so everyone was nervous ahead of the first fixture, against Basingstoke.
The first few minutes were positive from Romsey but the goals weren’t coming. Jake Rowland finally broke the padlock to smash one in from the top of the D past the Basingstoke goalkeeper. Romsey continued to press and great play from Ben Davidson led to romsey’s second goal scored by Jake Rowland. Throughout the game Raul Patel and Ben Whittaker managed to keep the defence strong letting in no goals to finish off the game 3-0, Jake Rowland completing his hatrick with a strong shot again beating Basingstoke’s goalkeeper.
Next fixture Haslemere 2nds ended in a disappointing draw. With Haslemere winning 1-0 at half time romsey brought on Thomas Croft-Baker and Jake Rowland to help strengthen the attack and 2 goals were scored in the second half by Romsey. But an unfortunate goal was scored in the last moments by Haslemere, levelling the score at 2:2.
Our last pool game was against the unbeaten Havant and feelings varied whether we would get through to the quarters and we needed a good performance. Early pressure from Havant was worrying but Romsey defence was solid and a great pass from Alex mills led to Art Barcia’s agonisingly close shot. A short corner was awarded to Havant and the ball was picked up at the top of the D and struck well towards the goal. The ball glanced off a stick to dribble onto the post and painfully into the goal. Despite losing 1:0 it was A truly outstanding performance from Romsey against such a well respected club who had won their prior games 5:0 and 3:0.
On goal difference we were through to the quarters against Aldershot and Farnham. We lost to the only goal of the game but had a great chance when Matt Loveday crossed in a lovely ball for Thomas Croft-Baker to pick up at the top of the D and strike powerfully resulting in an amazing save from the Aldershot goalkeeper
Man of the tournament for Romsey was stand-in goalieTom Edwards who made some outstanding saves and whom without we would not have been able to compete as our usual goalie was on holiday.
Despite the freezing conditions it was a thoroughly enjoyable time for Romsey against such big clubs with excellent effort and teamwork by all!
