Ladies 1s (0) vs (4) Winchester 1s

Scorers: n/a

Romsey ladies 1s took on top of the table Winchester in a clash that would put the newly promoted Romsey team through its paces.

Winchester began the game with incredible intensity, attacking with confidence and composure. Romsey were keen to match the visitors and put in the effort to keep the Winchester attackers at bay.

Romseys work rate was admirable, but Winchester were strong and after a couple of short corners that were repelled by the Romsey defence, they found a deflection to take the lead. Winchester followed up with a second shortly after to double their lead from an innocuous ball from outside the D..

Romsey fought back with their own attack, with Erica Jenner and player of the match Kate Moss, exchanging a 1-2 up the left to get into the D and win a short corner. Romsey produced an on target shot, but the Winchester keeper was able to match it. Winchester found a 3rd goal just before half time to give Romsey a mountain to climb.

The second half saw the visitors relax a little, and Romsey were able to find more space to work their passes. A couple more promising attacks saw the home side win a few more short corners, which were dealt with by the Winchester defence.

With Romsey stretched looking for a goal, Winchester were able to break and find a fourth.

Despite the scoreline, Romsey could take many positives from the game, and can feel positive about several aspects of their play. Captain Liz Forbes commented, “although we didn’t take any points from this fixture, it has made us stronger and better placed to take on the rest of the teams in this league”.
