Portsmouth & Southsea 3rd XI 0 – 7 Romsey Mens 2nd XI

Romsey Mens 2nd XI opened their Hampshire Div 6 account in fine style, hammering six past Portsmouth & Southsea at Admiral Lord Nelson School. Midfield dynamo Greig Stewart slotted Romsey’s first after a first 10 minutes dominated by the visitors. But then, moments later P&S had forced a penalty corner. The initial strike was repelled by Romsey keeper Craig Mellor, but the rebound shot struck the impenetrable Matt Pitcher on the shin on the goal line. However, the home side could only send the penalty stroke wide of Mellor’s right hand post. It would prove to be Portsmouth’s last chance.

After 20 minutes, Colin Harwood threaded a beautifully weighted pass to Jim East on the left hand edge of the P&S D. East slipped a reverse pass to Carl Hendy in space at the top of the circle, who dropped his marker before nailing a powerful strike low into the right corner.

Toby Hill reacted quickest to stab home the loose ball in a classic goalmouth scramble on the half hour, and then Stewart grabbed his second just before the break with a mesmerising solo effort for the visitors to go into half time 4-0 up.

Regular 3rd XI skipper Matt Clark, on 2nd XI duty courtesy of a cancellation, crashed home a piledriver of a strike immediately after his half time orange, before bursting into the D for Harwood to produce an equally venomous effort. Moments later Clark sneaked a second and Romsey’s seventh, dancing around the keeper before neatly tapping in on the backhand.
