Men 3rd XI took on middle of the table contenders Andover 4th XI after a week break from the game. Romsey played with loads of passion and intensity throughout the entire game to end it 8-1.

The scoring opened with a fantastically accidental goal from forward Fergus Longman. Longman made fantastic effort to get into the oppositions’ D after a long corner early on within the game. Longman danced around several players before making a pass to Captain Matt Clark on the far post. However, the pass chipped off the floor and sailed into the top left of the goal like some kind of mortar putting the home side ahead.

Not long afterwards Romsey were back on the attack with strong forward Nick Mason making his mark on the game. Fantastic one-two passing between Tim Bailey, Longman and Mason allowed Mason to see a gap in Andover’s defence and his opportunity and didn’t disappoint going one on one with the keeper and hitting it home from the top of the D.

The pressure continued with MOTM Mark McArdle making fantastic movement within the centre with Pete Cooper and Bailey moving up the field to supply J Robinson for a quick run up the right wing. Robinson made a great pass back for Cooper to fire the ball into the D for Captain Clark to first time touch the ball neatly into the net.

It was injury-returning player Martin Simpson-Scott who added his brace shortly before the half time whistle. After a long corner went to Romsey, Alex Halcoussis wasted no time in getting the ball back in play for Simpson-Scott’s initial reverse hit strike to hit powerfully into Andover’s young keeper helmet. After play stopped to ensure the keeper was ok, Romsey kept the pressure up to supply Simpson-Scott with his change to strike neatly home putting Romsey 4-0 up for half time.

Romsey’s second half continued with brilliant pressure but with minor moments of set back allowing Andover to get their single goal of the game. It was Simpson-Scott who added his 2nd of the game to the tally after some fantastic movement up the field by defender Jacob Arney. Arney neatly stopped the ball in defence and made his run alongside Clark. Several passes allowed Arney to make it up to Andover’s D to supply Simpson-Scott for a reverse hit strike into the bottom left of the goal.

Soon afterwards Romsey were able to gain a penalty flick after Andover stopped the ball on the line with their feet. Bailey took the flick powerfully but sadly hit the left hand post hard letting it ringing.

Romsey were able to gain several penalty corners throughout the game as well. Many of which in the 2nd half saw Bailey drive some powerful drag flicks at the goal but being stopped by Andover’s body. Romsey were not awarded another penalty corner on these. However, it was Cooper who made his stinging mark by beautifully hitting his trademark strike home putting Romsey 6-0.

Andover pressured hard and continued to search for the goal they needed. The goal came soon after McArdle’s stick caught an Andover played accidently, sending him head first into the ground. Sadly the Andover player sat out the remainder of the game. Andover continued the pressure and made it to Romsey’s D on several occasions. Keeper Callum Darch made several strong saves at the top of the D but couldn’t hold back the tide to make the score line 6-1.

Several strong strikes continued to come from Romsey including many from Mason who just hit wide on several occasions. But it was Longman who put Romsey 7-1 up with a huge strike into the D ricocheting off an Andover stick into the goal.

Romsey’s game was nicely topped off with a final goal from Simpson-Scott and his 3rd for the game in open play. Simpson-Scott made some fantastic one-two passing with Mason to give him the space he needed to strike it home.

Next week Romsey take on Haslemere away!
