Romsey Mens 2nd XI 8 – 2 WInchester

Romsey Mens 2nd XI completed a convincing win at home to WInchester to move up to third in Snows Hampshire Div 6, one of four teams on 18 points in a tight knot at the top of the table.

Sam Barcia opened the scoring after just 3 minutes, continuing his fine season with a neat finish from close range having been fed a penetrating pass from man of the match Simon Morford.SONY DSC A few minutes later midfield dynamo Greig Stewart fired home a powerful drag flick from a penalty corner to double the lead.

Romsey piled on the pressure, searching for a match winning lead. Colin Harwood intercepted a Winchester hit out and swiftly fed birthday boy Carl Hendy to smack in from close range for a 3-0 lead.

Winchester fought back hard to try to get a toe hold in the match and sustained some good pressure, drawing three magnificent saves from Romsey keeper Craig Mellor, never allowing Jim Ponsford and stand in sweeper Jim East to relax. Winchester pressed higher and were caught out on the counter, with Winchester old boy Tim Bailey breaking free through the middle, burst into the D and feed a reverse pass to winger James Boggis who crashed home Romsey’s fourth.

In the dying minutes of the half Winchester clawed a goal back. The visitors forced a penalty corner, and although Mellor once again produced a fine initial save, he was unsighted and Winchester reacted fasted to jab in the loose ball for a half time score on 4-1.

SONY DSCImmediately after the break Winchester grabbed another in fortuitous circumstances when a retreating forward fired a speculative shot which was deflected no less than three times on its way past a stander Mellor.

Romsey held their nerve however, and quickly replied when Boggis converted Hendy’s good approach work for a 5-2 lead. Hendy then set up Harwood whose shot clanged off the post for Bailey to net the rebound.

The visitors continued to press but were becoming more and more stretched, and were punished once more when Dave Andrews stole possession before firing a raking pass to Harwood who slipped a square pass for Stewart to nail a first time shot home. Bailey completed the scoring by dancing around the beleaguered Winchester keeper before neatly passing the ball into the centre of the goal for a final score of 8-2.
