The Romsey under 12 boys made it through the floods to meet Fareham for a match of 2 parts. By the end of the first 20 minutes they found themselves 3 nil down with the real concerns about what would happen in the next 40 minutes. Fareham’s goals started with a penalty flick due to a defensive foot on the goaline. The next goals and attacks were through many individual skilled runs with the Romsey giving too much space and freedom into the D. Things started to stabilise just before the first 20 minutes. However it was an inspired change in formation, by coach Pete Cooper, that changed the game dramatically. With the boys now playing 5 at the back and 3 in central midfield the Fareham attacks were stifled and a firm base for swift attacking moves created. The back five with Ben Whittaker and Noah Cooper coordinating the formation gelled and pressed well. Harry Croft-Baker, Matt Loveday and Jai Mew worked well in the centre regularly penetrating the Fareham D. Jai Mew, on debut for the club, had an excellent game showing calm, skilful movement and stick work with well directed passes. Romsey’s first goal came eventually after intense pressure in Fareham’s half with good team passing finished off by Ben Harris sweeping the ball into the goal. The final 20 minutes seemed to crescendo into even greater pressure from Romsey with Fareham seemingly not able to hold the ball up out of their half. Romsey’s second goal came with 10 minutes to go with Matt Dyer tidying up yet another exciting move slotting the ball passed the keeper.
This left Romsey with real belief that they could equalise. Piercing attacks and short corners kept coming with Romsey overcoming the Fareham outfield players with only the keeper preventing them from equalising. Despite some firecracker shots on target from Croft-Baker and a clever flick from open play which hit the post, Romsey could not make it leaving the score 3:2. However they came away knowing that they had played an amazing game and showed great character to nearly turn their fortunes around after such a difficult start.
