Romsey started positively against a very well rehearsed Winchester side. Romsey adapted to the bouncy Winchester pitch, putting pressure on from the start, however it was the home side who took advantage, winning a penalty corner and converting to take a 1-0 lead.

Romsey were quick on the attack and Amy Edwards put excellent pressure on their defence, poaching the ball from Winchester and winning a penalty corner. The resulting short saw Erica Jenner unleash a drag flick, denied only by the fantastic in-form Winchester keeper.

Winchester made a quick break and a very skilful passage of play saw them take a two goal lead.

Romsey, not to be deterred, kept working hard, and again put pressure on the Winchester defence. Edwards won the ball in the D, and slipped it back to Emily Bradshaw on the P-spot to shoot wide.

The second half saw some great clearances from Caitlin Hogan-Lloyd, who developed the play up the right, releasing Becky Hutchins in an advanced position to run at the goal and take on the goalkeeper 1 on 1. The keeper was quick to see the danger and was out fast to save the blushes of her defence.

Winchester won a controversial short corner, from which they scored their 3rd.

Romsey cleared the ball from defence to midfield where Gemma Simpson distributed to Jenner. Bradshaw won Romsey a third short corner having received the ball on the 23. Romsey couldn’t make it count and were denied by solid defending from the home side.

Winchester gained another penalty corner of their own, against the run of play and scored from a straight strike.

Player of the match Hutchins gave 100% and chasing down every ball, and making leading runs. The scoreline was not reflective of the hard work and determination of a much improved Romsey side, who stood their ground against top of the league side.
