Ladies 1s (2) vs (1) Haselmere 1s

Scorers: Moss, Bishop

Amidst the disruption of the flooding, Romsey Ladies 1s took on Haselmere in their last game before the half term break.

Both teams started with high intensity, in a highly competitive game. Haselmere had a run of pressure gaining a few short corners which were quashed by the home sides defence. Haselmere did manage to get the ball in the back of the net, but unfortunately for the visitors, it was after the whistle was blown. Romsey kept battling, and were finding space to develop the play and develop attacks of their own, with a couple of early shots on goal.

Fifteen minutes in, Gemma Simpson took a blow to the head as she made a timely block of a shot from Haselmere at the top of the D. The injury saw Romsey reduced to the bare eleven for the remainder of the game. The sight of the gushing injury to teammate, Romsey were fired up with even more determination to get control of the game.

Romsey had a good percentage of possession, and developed the play across the pitch in a very structured and solid fashion. Romsey pushed the visitors back, pressing Haselmere hard, and giving them no options from their defensive 16s.

Rosie Bishop, having a storming game up front, pressured the defence to get Romsey’s first short corner of the game. Erica Jenner unleashed a shot which was saved, with the spritely Bishop on hand to pick up the rebound, and Kate Moss on the post to finish reverse stick and take the lead.

Romsey maintained their form and completed the first half 1-0 up.

Unusually, Romsey came out hard in the second half and upped the intensity of passing making use of the wings. Joint players of the match Erica Jenner, and Rosie Bishop, linked up a few times, to create opportunities for Bishop to double the lead, including a shot that beat the keeper, but narrowly rolled wide, just skimming the post.

Against the run of play, Haselmere played of the D, and temporarily overloaded the home defence, giving a free shot from the top of the D. The quirky shot flew into the top right corner despite a diving save from goalkeeper, Selena Cox.

The equaliser didn’t last for long, as Romsey kept their heads up and responded instantly with some great passing play up the left and returning to Moss on the 23-line. She fired a ball into the D towards the post, where Bishop got a beautiful touch to divert the ball past the keeper to score a much deserved goal.

Romsey held off the advances of Haselmere despite beginning to tire. A short corner on the final whistle gave Haselmere a final chance to draw the game, but the defence covered the angles and Emily Slade cleared to end the game.

A cheer from Romsey signalled the end of a very hard fought win. Stand-in captain Slade said, “fantastic to get the win today. Our performance was brilliant across the pitch, and the girls were really fired up to settle the score from the away game.”
