Romsey U16 girls played Havant away on Sunday narrowly losing 3-2 in an enthralling game. Havant dominated early possession and it needed some stout defending of the D by Zoe Lynch, Emily Pitt-Pitts and Emily Williams to keep Havant at bay. Romsey relied on quick breakouts orchestrated by Georgina Appleby using the pace of left forward Jade Phillips to exploit some early opportunities for Lydia Kearney and Matilda Bryant. When the ball dubiously hit a Romsey foot just inside the area the eagle eyed referee Bart Simpson awarded a short corner. The resultant corner was well charged down by center back Gabby Herbert but the ball rebounded to a Havant striker and her shot deflected off the stick of Marge to wrong foot the Romsey keeper Nyah Sherwin. Romsey struck back with Emma Periam combining well with on the left with Jade Phillips who put Lydia Kearney through on goal but she was forced wide of the D by some good Havant defending. On the stroke of half time Romsey were unable to defend a short corner and Havant snatched a second goal against the run of play. Buoyed by their half time tactical team talk by coach Maggie and manager Edna. Romsey started the second half brightly forcing Havant back with Georgina Appleby stamping her authority in the center of midfield. The early domination of the ball paid dividends when Lisa fed a slide rule pass down the wing to Jade Phillips who crossed for the oncoming Lydia Kearney to strike an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner. Romsey were now winning all the 50:50 balls with Rosanna Middleton and Matilda Bryant not allowing their opposite numbers any time on the ball. It was against the run of play when a “Homer” like error allowed Havant to score a third soft goal. Romsey to their credit did not let their head drops and almost pulled a goal back when Lydia Kearney evaded a series of tackles only for her shot to be well saved. Jade Phillips who’s pace was causing Havant continued problems again broke away and her pin point pass was perfectly executed by Lydia Kearney to make a final nail biting five minutes for the Havant to narrowly hold to their 3 -2 lead. Special mention must be made of the excellent performance of Romsey goal keeper Nyah Sherwin who played up from the U14’s.
