New Milton (0) vs (4) Ladies 1s

Scorers: Jenner, Bishop, Edwards, Bradshaw

Romsey ladies 1s travelled into the forest to meet New Milton in an important game to seal themselves in Division 1 for next season.

The game began brightly, with Romsey taking the initiative and making several forays deep into the New Milton defence. Kate Olingschlaeger lead the way down the right, abley supported by captain Liz Forbes.

Romsey were rewarded after Rosie Bishop’s tenacity in the D to win a short corner. Erica Jenner unleashed a beautifully executed dragflick into the top left corner, for Romsey to take a well deserved lead.

The home side, fighting to avoid relegation, put their efforts into playing the long ball. Caitlin Hogan-Lloyd made several key interceptions at the back, including an awesome pick out of the air to cut out the New Milton through ball. Although fairly untroubled, Romsey’s defence was solid, conceding no short corners in the first half, and the ever consistent Jane Palmer making calm tackles when required.

Romsey’s attack linked up with ease, creating space for each other and allowing Gemma Simpson to drive forward. Romsey doubled their lead after a period of play that saw them distribute the ball with quality and calmness around the pitch to open up the New Milton defence. Becky Hutchins capitalised on the space and dribbled with intent into the D, slipping to Bishop to smash past the keeper.

Half time saw Romsey 2-0 up, relaxed and comfortable.

Second half saw more of the same lovely passing moves around the Romsey team. New Milton developed a few moves that gave them a shot on goal, but Selena Cox in the Romsey goal calmly dealt with the threat.

Romsey were still hungry to attack, and developed the play from the back, with Emily Slade continuously providing an outlet on the left.

A short corner saw Romsey grab a 3rd goal, with Jenner sliding the ball through for Amy Edwards to finish on the post, with a very slick text book routine.

Romsey added a fourth, from an uncharacteristic strike from Bradshaw at the top of the D into the far corner.

Bishop and Bradshaw shared the player of the match vote, but everyone played their part in a super team effort that highlights just how far the Ladies 1s have progressed this season. Romsey’s win puts the ladies 1s, 8 points clear of the relegation zone and in a very comfortable position going into the final three games of the season.
