With just two friendlies to go until the new league season, Romsey had arranged a friendly away to Fareham 6, also in Hampshire Division 5 this coming season.

Tom Croft-Baker, just thirteen, made his Romsey 2’s debut and upfront was 14 year old Charlie Harrigan, mixed in with the experienced Romsey 2’s players against a similarly formatted Fareham 6 XI.

Fareham started quicker, and with Romsey player without a Goalkeeper but a kicking back, Stuart Robertson in this role had to be alert early on to ensure danger was snuffed out higher up the pitch away from the Romsey D.

Dave Andrews, Joe Welch and Jim Ponsford were able supporters as Fareham pressed but could not make ant clear cut chances.

This allowed for Romsey’s midefield to take more control of the game and Greig Stewart started to command the centre of the pitch, bringing in Jacob Arney and Tom Croft-Baker to make some creative moves, one which Charlie Harrigan was unlucky to convert and another where new boy James Foster was tackled inside the Fareham D.

Romsey had a strong squad and Carl Hendy came on to provide some experience, he was set up by Simon Morford, but as he took the ball wide right of the goal keeper he saw his shot pass agonizingly wide of the left hand post.

Morford and Stewart began creating a number of chances, and a slick aerial from Morford found Hendy who controlled the ball beautifully before passing it round the last Fareham defender for inside Forward Colin Harwood to run on to, Harwood made no mistake powering the ball past the helpless keeper to give Romsey a 1-0 HT lead.

The second half was evenly balanced, Harrigan had a shot that went narrowly wide and Arney was creating havoc down the right.

James Croft-Baker was a solid in defence and was moving to create openings for Romsey to play the ball out of defence. JCB and Toby Hill combing on a a number of occasions with Chris Arnold to build move down the Romsey left.

Mid-way through the half Fareham got a deserved equaliser, when they over turned Romsey and then outnumbered them in attack to score past the kicking back Robertson.

The resulting 1-1 draw was an excellent outing at this stage of pre-season.
