Southampton Uni (1) – (4) Ladies 1s

Scorers: Bradshaw, Jenner, Olingschleager(2)

Romsey travelled to Eastleigh to play their second game of the season against Southampton Uni. Constant rain all morning made for a wet but very quick pitch at the Uni ground.

The game started at a fast pace, with both teams battling to get the ball under their control. It was Romsey who looked the stronger, and began to retain possession and put the home side’s defence under pressure. But, it was the students who took their chance against the run of play, breaking away to take the lead.

Romsey were not deterred and replied with an equaliser from Emily Bradshaw. The build-up was slick with Emily Slade sliding the ball up the line to youngster Jade Phillips. Phillips carried the ball confidently towards the corner, laying it off to Kate Moss who’s timing was perfect to slide the ball into the path of the on-rushing Bradshaw. With only the keeper to beat, Bradshaw went round the goalie and tapped in for the equaliser.

With their tails up, Romsey took the lead shortly after. Player of the match, Becky Hutchins caught the uni off-guard taking a quick free hit and creating some space to slip the ball through to Erica Jenner. With back to goal, Jenner’s first shot hit the post, but she was not to be denied and reacted faster than the defence to put the ball in the goal.

Romsey continued to badger the Uni defence, stopping them from re-cycling the ball and causing the defence to slip-up. Romsey made the most of the errors and soon made it 3-1 after Kate Olingschlaeger shot confidently past the keeper.

At half time, Romsey were feeling confident and were well in control of the match. The students made some attempts to claw their way back into the game, but the Romsey defence matched every attack with well-timed tackles and controlled distribution.

Romsey enjoyed the majority of possession in the second half, and penetrated the D several times, but couldn’t find that decisive finish.

A great opportunity came to Kate Moss, who found herself in a 1v1 situation with the goalie. Moss successfully beat the goalie, but before completing the move to put the ball in the net, was caught awkwardly by the diving Southampton keeper. A certain goal scoring opportunity, a penalty flick was awarded, but unfortunately, Romsey couldn’t convert.

After several attempts on goal, and some good saves from Uni’s goal-keeper, Olingschlaeger found the net for Romsey’s 4th and complete a competent victory.

Whilst Romsey were disappointed not to have a few more, it was a competent display and sees Romsey Ladies 1st XI sitting with 2 wins out of 2 at the top of the Hampshire Division 1.
