Ladies 1s (1) – (1) Haselmere 1s

Scorer: Jenner

Romsey ladies 1st XI travelled north, sharing the points in a well match battle with Haselmere. The game was open with chances at both ends, matched by a fantastic goal keeping display by both goalies.

Romsey dominated the first half, winning several short corners and generating attacking threats through Katie Pake, Rosie Bishop and Kate Olingschlaeger. Whilst short corners were well executed, the Haselmere keeper was on form, to keep her side in the game.

Romsey took the lead shortly into the second half, as the ball moved swiftly up the left hand side. The lay off into Erica Jenner’s path was perfect, allowing her to burst through the densely packed area and drive at the goal. Jenner calmly took the ball round the keeper as she committed, and squeezed the ball past the defenders on the line.

Romsey’s lead was short lived, as Haselmere bounced back with a couple of speedy counter attacks. They won a short corner and converted with a strike into the left hand side. Haselmere’s confidence was high, and they had a couple of chances soon after, with Romsey keeper Laura Kemp up to the challenge and making the saves.

Support from Emily Slade and Caitlin Hogan-Lloyd allowed Romsey to develop the play up the wings and find gaps in behind the home sides defence. Pass of the game came from Slade, as she made a seering through ball to Jade Phillips who was in acres of room. Phillips collected the ball and drove at the D, but couldn’t find the target, smashing the ball wide of the far post.

Haselmere began to dominate late in the game, but Romsey continued to work hard, with Jane Palmer and Becky Hutchins controlling the middle and stifling the attacks. Liz Forbes made some crucial tackles to ensure Haselmere’s forwards would not get a free shot on goal.

Phillips and Forbes shared the player of the match vote, but everyone played their part today. A fair result, with both teams showing their attacking threat, the reverse fixture in February promises to be very exciting.
