Romsey embarked on their second full outing as a 4th XI with an entertaining game away to Hampshire Division 9 Alton 3s in cold conditions.

An even game saw some end to end play in the opening quarter of an hour with Joe Powell and David Forgan exchanging some good close passes to create a number of half chances. Ben Manning in the centre of the pitch with Colin Harwood looked solid and the young fourteen year old intercepted a number of passes, and played in Gus Reid and Ollie Bryant down the right, and switched play to bring in Nathan Aspin down the left.

Carl Hendy came on upfront and had a couple of shots just wide, before some super play between Bryant and Gus Reid created a chance for young Morgan Robertson. Stuart Robertson came on to play in the centre of midfield and he combined with his son to almost open the scoring.

The defence of Daves Andrews and Loescher were solid, with Andrews pushing forward as Jamie Sanderson and Daniel Newman proved more than capable of creating a solid back four, with Goalkeeper Alex Buck relatively untested until the last few minutes of the half. Initially Alton broke through the Romsey defence for the first time and hit the post and a soon after opened the scoring with a shot from an angle which Buck had no chance with.

Romsey had a couple of penalty corners near the end of the half, Forgan pushed out to Harwood for the first and the goalkeeper pushed the ball over the bar and then he made another save but as the ball looked to drop in on the line a defender cleared.

Romsey pushed for an equaliser in the second half, Reid and Powell created a number of chances for Hendy and Forgan, and Bryant was in inpsired form on the right crossing for Aspin and Forgan.

As the game wore on Alton doubled their lead when they overturned a Romsey hit out and Buck was beaten by a pass to an unmarked player at the far post.

Romsey were not to be denied a goal and a Forgan penalty corner was played wide to Harwood, who played it to Robertson, he played it back to Forgan who forced it over the line to maintain his 4th XI scoring record, in fact the only 4th XI scorer this season so far.

As Romsey pressed for an equaliser Andrews pushed up and Daniel Newman covered him at full back in an excellent game in defence, but Harwood & Roberston’s close combination play just couldn’t result in a second goal.
