David Miles – Director of Coaching

David MilesDave Miles has been playing hockey since age 12, and started coaching when he was only 16. He lead and coached his Junior teammates through from U14s up to into adult hockey.

Dave has a Level 1 coaching qualification, and is very close to achieving his Level 2.

Dave continues to both play and coach the Romsey Men\’s 1st XI, who have been incredibly successful, achieving promotion 9 times in the past 10 seasons. They now play in Regional Division 2; an impressive feat from a small club.

Over the past two seasons, Dave has been involved in coaching the Ladies Section of the Club. His calm and patient manner has brought great success in developing all the ladies, regardless of age, ability or fitness.

Last season, Dave\’s hard work at training and unwavering support on match days ensured that the Romsey Ladies 1st XI had an amazing season; gaining promotion to Hampshire Division 1 and retaining an unbeaten record at the top of the table.

Whether Dave is coaching, playing or supporting other coaches, his passion and knowledge for the game shines through.

On taking up his new post, Dave said…

“I\’m very happy to be appointed Director of Coaching at Romsey Hockey Club. I\’m looking forward to working with and supporting all the great coaches we have.”

“I\’m really keen to encourage and develop a consistent approach to coaching across the Club. From minis and juniors through to adults, I want every player and every team to get the inspiration and guidance they need to improve their game.”

Lewis Birch

Lewis Birch

Lewis has been playing hockey since first joining Hounsdown Secondary School at age 11. The intention was to just give it a go, but as it turns out he was pretty handy. His P.E. teacher at the time suggested he start playing club hockey, and encouraged him to join Southampton – Otters and Men’s 2nd XI.

After a few years Lewis took a break from hockey and started to play a lot of golf; due in part to parental pressure to focus on just one sport.

It wasn\’t until Lewis joined Brockenhurst College that he picked up a stick again. Brock, who had never had a full hockey team before, enjoyed such success that in only the second year of playing hockey an academy was set up for the following year, which is still going really strong now. This was where coaching first became a part of Lewis\’ hockey as they learnt and put into practice the NCFE Levels 1 & 2.

It was while Lewis was in college that he met a certain Thomas ‘Cat’ McCarthy. When Cat discovered Lewis was not playing Hockey at club Level he persuaded Lewis to try Romsey Hockey Club.

Lewis started off in the Men’s 2nd XI on the right wing, and after a few games impressing Dave Miles (1st XI Captain) he was called up to play for the 1st XI. That was 4 seasons ago, and the team has achieved great success; earning promotion each season.

Lewis now plays as the centre forward, and the team are competing at regional level.

Lewis has always sought to teach himself as much as possible, and has learnt a lot from having an empty pitch, a bag of balls and a goal. He has been eager to help others get into hockey, and particularly to help the younger teams around the Club.

Lewis has teamed up with Pete Cooper, a good friend within the Club, to help the BU12s & BU14s develop their game and hopefully move them into becoming 1st team players down the line.

Pete Cooper

Pete-CooperPete has been playing hockey since year 11 at Romsey School, and got more involved when he joined Barton Peveril College where he became the team vice-captain. It was at this point he was encouraged to join a club, and joined the one and only Romsey Hockey club.

Pete played for the Men\’s 2nd XI at centre back for a season and then went off to University. He played one match for the Men\’s University team, and looked set to play for the season. However, a freak injury walking up some stairs ended up requiring a knee operation which took him completely out of the sport for over a year.

Whilst doing a work placement, back home in the third year of his degree, Pete was able to get back involved with the club and start playing again. He agreed to help establish the Men\’s 3rd XI with Matt Clark, and is the team vice-captain. The team achieved promotion in only their second season together, and are now looking to continue their rise up the league divisions.

Pete is a qualified tennis coach, and was looking to combine his coaching experience with his love for hockey. Consequently he has joined Lewis Birch, a good friend, to coach the BU12s and BU14s. Together they hope to help the boys improve their game and aid their development into future Men’s hockey players.
