Girls U12 Match Reports

Romsey U12 girls were up against a strong Bournemouth side on Sunday with match debuts for Madeleine Bill and Phoebe Shelley.
The first third saw no goals scored by either team with the play being equally down both ends, the Romsey midfielders Grace Loveridge, Katie Smart and Jennie Barnard working well to move the ball out to the wings where Alice Appleton and Phoebe Shelley took on the Bournemouth defenders enabling some good crosses into the circle but just couldn’t find the finish from the forwards Catherine Clarke and Tessa Drake.
The second third Bournemouth scored their first goal keeping our defenders Tara Alavi, Sophie Davidson, Lola Field and Naeve Pountney busy. Bournemouth were quick to intercept and pick up on balls that the Romsey girls were slow to receive enabling them to continue to constantly attack our goal.
The Romsey keeper Daisy Richardson made some cracking saves to keep the score down but a strong second goal for Bournemouth came in the last third making the final score 2-0 to Bournemouth. A well fought match by the Romsey girls but in the end Bournemouth proved to be quicker on the ball and more eager to take shots at goal.

Romsey U12 Girls first match of the season was against Salisbury and for most of the girls this was their first outing on a full size pitch!! The first third saw Salisbury score 2 goals fairly early on with good solid defending from Sophie Davidson, Ellie Hanslip and Lucy Taylor-Blake. There were no further goals conceded in the second third with Romsey creating convincing breaks in midfield from the teamwork of Grace Loveridge, Phoebe Peters and Katie Smart with Alice Appleton and Marianne Lawson on the wings pushing the ball up to the forwards Jennie Barnard, Catherine Clarke and Tessa Drake who consistently battled to find the shots at goal but were unlucky to score against a strong Salisbury defence. The final third saw Salisbury score 3 more goals as Romsey had decreased their defensive line up but defenders Tara Alavi, Charlotte Dunkley and Lola Field fought hard to keep the Salisbury forwards out. The Romsey girls showed great potential and although the final score was 5-0 to Salisbury it didn’t fully reflect the closely fought game, with special mention to Daisy Richardson as goalkeeper who Salisbury voted a well deserved player of the match for her brilliant kicking saves even with a poorly knee!!

photoU12girlsRomsey Hockey Clubs U12 girls did themselves proud when the represented Hampshire at the Regional Hockey Finals at Surbiton Hockey Club.  The other counties represented were Middlesex, Sussex, Surrey, Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire.  The rain held off, the level of hockey was very high, and Romsey started well with draws against both Lewes and Teddington.  A couple of very close 1:0 losses  to Maidenhead, and eventual winners Surbiton were very frustrating, the scores didn’t do the team justice.  Final games against Marlow and Oxford gave our keeper Alice Dyer some serious action.  She was so brave and a really excellent goalie, with shot after shot pummelling her she stayed brave and kept her head.  Coach – Erica Jenner and assistant coach Jacob Arney were delighted with how the girls played, and although the girls may be disappointed in the short term they will be able to draw from the experience which will benefit their hockey next season.  The Romsey squad Zoe Henderson (captain), Bobs Cooper, Ella Long, Sarah Macleod, Alice Dyer (GK),  Sophie Lawson, Georgia Scott, Izzy Thomas, Rebecca Collyer and Phoebe Moriarty-Palios.  Well Done!

Romsey took two good 7 aside teams to the annual in2hockey Hampshire qualifying round held at southampton sports centre on 23rd March
Romsey 2’s were placed in a tough pool with the likes of Havant & Winchester, both having a large contingent of Hampshire players. They started slowly with a couple of tricky games against Haslemere And Winchester. Lulu Desouza found the goal with the excellent support of Phoebe Moriarty-Palios and Emz Wann. But it wasn’t till the 4th pool match when they beat New Milton 2:1 to place them 4th in their pool. A couple of difficult games left the Romsey 2’s in a very credible 8th place overall. The rest of the Rom2’s squad were Flo (Floppy) Peters, Mollie Biddlecombe, Polly Sanderson, Georgina Hart, Charlie Griffiths (Gk) and Sophie Davidson.

Romsey 1’s were drawn in Pool A and came first up against hosts Southampton, Romsey were strong and with 2 goals from Bobs Cooper, 2 from Zoe Henderson and a fifth from Ella Long, it was a convincing win and 3 points on the board. Next up, Petersfield, and a similar story, a brace from Sophie Lawson, and one each from Bobs and Ella – another 3 points and a clean sheet for Goalkeeper Alice Dyer.
Fareham were next in the pool stages, and were equal on 6 points, but Romsey’s strength shone with 2 excellent goals from Georgia Scott, one for Zoe and Sophie, and 2 text book short corners the first fed by Bobs, Stopped by Ella and struck home by Captain Zoe Henderson. The second fed by Sarah Mcloed and scored by Izzy Thomas. Another 3 points and a good position within the pool.
Trojans were next and Sophie Lawson came into her own scoring all 3 goals and the play never really bothering Alice in goal at our end.
Romsey entered the Play off stages as winners of their pool to face the runner up in Pool 2 in the semi finals. Havant (with their County players) were seen off by another series of short corners, both fed by Sarah Mcloed and scored by the excellent strikes of Zoe Henderson
Just the final to go, and Romsey met Winchester who were also unbeaten at this stage. Romsey were yet to concede a goal, and the final was extremely evenly matched. Too Many Romsey shots on goal to count but just couldn’t find the net, great defending by Rebecca Collyer, Ella Long and Sarah, but then a really fabulous break by winchesters’ strongest player and a bullet like shot passed Alice in goal to put Romsey 1:0 down. A very gallant fight during the second half, with tired legs, but Romsey couldn’t equalise.
Romsey finished as very worthy runners up and received medals and a Pennant for the club. They progress to the regional rounds of the In2hockey competition to be held at Surbiton at the end of April.
All the girls should be very proud of themselves as are all the parents and coaches, thanks to Erica and Jacob for all their efforts and to the support of all the parents.

Romsey travelled to Andover on Sunday, to play a very young and inexperienced Andover Team. Romsey were able to utilise the time as a training match, working on positional play, keeping formation, and making the ball do the work. Romsey had many shots on goal, (Goal shooting accuracy to be on the plan for next training session) more misses than can be counted, but successful hat-tricks from Georgia Scott and Lulu Desouza. Also on the score sheet were Zoe Henderson, Bobs Cooper, Izzy Thomas and Sophie Lawson. The Defence ably lead by Sarah Macloed were rarely tested, but Georgina Hart, Sophie Davidson and debutant Polly Sanderson were able to spend the time practicing maintaining their positions. Ella Long as ever very strong in midfield and Phoebe Moriarty-Palios were able to make some great runs, and Jennie Barnard showed her versatility starting upfront and dropping back able to produce some good playmaking passes. Man of the Match Zoe Henderson, a great ambassador for Romsey Hockey Club, Magnanimous in victory and a great example to the rest of the squad. Final result 14-0.

Romsey under 12’s came head to head on Sunday with the current league runners up Salisbury A’s. The score was a 2 all draw with Zoe Henderson scoring both goals. Sarah MacLeod, Rebecca Colyer, Ella Long and Sophie Davidson putting up a strong defence Zoe Henderson (player of the match), Georgia Scott, Bobs Cooper, Phoebe Moriarty-Palios, Georgina Hart and Izzy Thomas were in midfield and Flo Peters, Lulu Desouza and Sophie Lawson were putting up a strong attack as well. Charlie Griffiths in goal saved loads of goals and was a great help to the defence. In the first half we were 1 nil up then very quickly in the second half they scored 2 goals then in the last minute we scored the equalizer that lead to the draw.

Our U12 Girls played away at Southampton this morning, during a welcome break in the Rain. Several last minute illnesses meant we only had 11 players, who were all suffering slightly from too many mince pies! – The first third was very positive, some excellent attacking play by Georgia Scott, Bobs Cooper, Annabel Shrimpton and Jennie Barnard, meant the majority of play in the Southampton end. One excellent “text book” short corner fed by Bobs to the excellent Zoe Henderson say Romsey on the score Board, and a couple of minutes later a brilliantly struck hit by Zoe again from the edge of the D saw Romsey 2.0 up.
The second third saw Southampton get a little stronger, the run of play went more in their direction and Ella Long man of the match), Rebecca Collyer and Georgina Hart were called in to play to defend our goal. With no goal keeper (due to sickness) Southampton managed to slot one away shortly before the whistle.

The final third, and both teams were tiring and perhaps regretting quite so much Christmas Chocolate. Much more end to end play, Emily Wann made some great runs, as did Zoe Henderson with a pitch long run, which was almost slotted home by Jennie, but eventually it was a cheeky Southampton goal evened up the score.

A good start to 2014, Romsey claimed the points as half of Southampton’s players were U14’s

Romsey U12 Girls went to Brockenhurst on Sunday for New Milton Hockey Clubs 7-a-side tournament. Romsey’s first game against Winchester A’s saw many end to end runs and chases, it was Winchester who scored the first and Romsey were unlucky not to equalise. Straight on to Bournemouth and the Girls had warmed up a little. Charlie Griffiths was excellent in goal, making numerous amazing saves, and her defenders lead by Rebecca Collyer began to gel. Georgina Hart showed the result of lots of practice and consistently made excellent tackles and pushed the play up to the midfield. The result a draw 1:1 . Next came the Hosts, New Milton, the home advantage (and too much hot chocolate in the break for Romsey) meant a 2:0 loss. The girls were fired up however and a quick re-shuffle meant that Jennie Barnard became Centre Forward, and Sophie Lawson moved (reluctantly) to midfield. Jennie definitely got a taste of scoring , and with a couple from Sophie and another from Flo Peters the match was tied 4:4. The final meeting was Winchester. Bobs Cooper moved out of defence and back into Midfield, Emily Wann right forward and Annabel Shrimpton kept feeding the ball, an end to end very tense battle ensued Jennie scored a couple and Sophie another ending in well earned victory 3:2.

Romsey U12 girls had tough competition against a strong Bournemouth team on 24th November. They fought hard throughout the match and a strong central defensive combination of Alice Dyer in goal, Sarah MacLeod as sweeper and Ella Long as centre back ably assisted by Rebecca Collyer, Mollie Biddlecombe and Sophie Davidson on the wings, minimised the Bournemouth goals. Good teamwork in the midfield of Zoe Henderson, Phoebe Moriarty-Palios, Georgia Scott and Bobs Cooper created opportunities but unfortunately no goals. The final score of 4-0 to Bournemouth didn’t fully reflect the closely fought game which was full of excitement. There are now only 3 points separating the top three teams in the South Hampshire U12 Girls league with Romsey lying third.

Romsey’s U12 Girls put out some younger players to face Southampton in their 3rd league match in consecutive weeks. Georgina Hart &, Annabel Shrimpton played their first match for Romsey and played well backing up the more seasoned midfield players. Flo Peters (first match), up front with Phoebe Moriarty-Palios proved a good pairing, but by the end of the first Third it was The strength of Zoe Henderson who slotted the first goal in. Sophie Lawson and Phoebe each had a goal in the second third, assisted by Georgia Scott & Izzy Thomas showing some excellent play on the wings. A couple of well positioned shots by Bobs Cooper left the final score at 5:0 The defence had to work hard to keep the slate clean, Sarah MacLeod as sweeper, ably assisted by Rebecca Collyer, Ella Long, Lola Field and Mollie Biddlecombe, plus some excellent saves from Charlie Griffiths, meant a good result for Romsey in the league.
