with the Isle of Wight who travelled over to mainland and provided great opposition in true Mixed style with plenty of fun in an entertaining match.

The home side started strongly and Carl Hendy and Emma Bouchard both had chances but the IOW goal keeper in inspired form kept them out.

Bethan Knight and Emily Slade provided strong attacking plan fro the back to support Danny Miles and Ben Butcher in the centre, they set up Hendy who saw his shot smothered.

IOW came in to the game as the half moved on, and played a great one touch move with that went round Dave Miles and Dave Edwards at the back to give Laura Kemp no chance in goal to give the visitors the lead.

Romsey were straight back at their opponents and Bouchard and James Fraser combined to cross teh ball in the IOW circle for Colin Harwood to take a first time shot past the keeper to equalise.

Romsey were on top and Tracy Nicoll combined from left back with Fraser and Miles to move the ball upfield. A pass in to the circle hit and IOW foot, but as they stopped waiting for a penalty corner, the ball ran through to Ruth Manners at the far post who calmly pushed it in to goal to put Romsey 2-1 up.

The second half saw IOW streteched as they pushed for an equaliser, while Romsey were top. Lesley Humphreys was denied a hat trick of chances by the inspired IOW keeper, and Ruth Manners saw her chance of a second goal saved with the keeper rushing out to block. Hendy suffered a simialr fate, as the IOW keeper made sure Romsey didnt get a third.

Romsey then required a fantastic save from their own Keeper Laura Kemp to keep them ahead, she pushed a high goal bound shot away and made sure the follow up was swept away.

With Captain Tracy Nicoll having to go off for a cut on the nose, and with Romsey Ladies Slade, Humphreys and Manners interchanging beautiful passes down the right in teh second half, Romsey deservedly ran out 2-1 winners to progress to the next round.

RHC Festive Mixed Hockey Tournament

Twas the Saturday before Christmas, and all across the Romsey astro-pitch, hockey players were waking, preparing their festive outfits…!

It was the Romsey’s Festive Mixed tournament, an annual event giving a chance for players across the club to come together before the Christmas break and play lots of hockey. Players from all senior teams were represented, giving a great mixture of youth and experience from both the ladies and mens’ sections. It also saw opportunity for families to go head-to-head (or antler to pointy ear) as mothers and sons, and siblings took to the pitch to battle it out.

The brown team, consisting of Reindeer’s and Christmas puddings got off to a bright start, taking a convincing win against the Santa’s and nudging ahead at the final whistle against the Stars.

The Elves joined forces with a few Christmas trees to create a green team. With pointy ears flapping and bells jingling, they split the points in a well matched game with the Santa’s.

Snowmen, a fairy and a rather bazaar looking white turkey got off to a slow start as they initially struggled with the tournament rules. However, after a few dodgy touches, the white team began to put it together finding the net against the tiring Reindeer’s, and the wilting Christmas trees.

The yellow team brought together Stars, and a Christmas Cracker who outshone the Elves and just pipped the Santa’s to the points after a cracking game. The Santa’s picked up the pace against the Snowmen with possibly their best performance of the day, attacking with speed that melted their opponents.

After a thoroughly enjoyable morning of hockey, the Snowmen, lead by a Fairy, were crowned winners.

The tournament was finished off by mulled wine and minced pies, with players of all festive species applauding the umpires and organisers for an extremely fun hockey tournament.

Romsey Hockey Club would like to thank Umpires, Parents and Supporters for helping us through 2015, and we look forward to see you in 2016.

Merry Christmas!

Romsey Hockey Club celebrated the end of the 2014-15 season in style, with a mixed 7-a-side tournament followed by dinner, awards and dancing.

The mixed tournament saw players from all the adults teams joining forces and battling it out for the coveted wooden trophy! The Yellow team were the early favourites but it was the White team who took the overall victory with a great display of teamwork from Danny Nicoll, Laura Thompson, Gabby Herbert, Dave Edwards, Ruth MacLeod, Becky Hutchins and Dave Andrews. Prizes were awarded, courtesy of Gryphon hockey.

The afternoon concluded with a penalty flick competition, giving rising star Georgie Pugh a chance to show off her goalkeeping prowess. The intensity grew as players were knocked out leaving Stuart Robertson, Lewis Birch, Gigi Herbert, Danny Miles and Kate Moss vying for the top spot. One by one shots were saved or put wide, and Kate Moss came out as the victor in a throughly enjoyable end to the afternoons hockey.

Celebrations continued into the evening with a Dinner & Dance hosted at the White Horse in Romsey. Awards were presented and it was a time to reflect on a successful season for the club, which sees both its Ladies 3rd XI and Mens 3rd XI gain promotions from their respective leagues.

Romsey HC attempted to run off some of their Festive excess with a game of mixed hockey. With players aged from 12 to, well it would be rude to ask Tracey, the game was played in good spirits. For the record the Blues won, but Club Chairman, Colin Harwood, tried almost as hard to jump out of the way – see pictures below – as he did to avoid his Hatrick Jug!!
