colin-harwoodWelcome to the website of Romsey Hockey Club, and the Chairman’s overview of our fantastic Club.

Since the merger in 2009/10 to form the Romsey Hockey Club – with the Ladies’, Men’s and Juniors’ Sections – the Club continues to grow from strength to strength.

Whilst the Club retains its smaller club feel – with a welcoming approach for all players alike, no matter the age or ability – the results have been exceptional.

In 2012/13 the Ladies’ 1st XI not only won Hampshire Division 2 but they also added the Hampshire Trophy for good measure. They have been playing in the top tier of Hampshire Hockey since. The Ladies’ 2nd XI and 3rd XI have provided growing support over the past seasons. The solid foundation for the Ladies’ Section is looking to grow further in 2015/16 to ensure we retain experienced and novice players alike for Saturday matches.

The Men’s 1st XI who secured their place in the Hampshire/Surrey Regional League back in 2012/13 now start their third successive campaign at this level. This is quite some feat for a club of our size. It has involved some travel and some tough seasons but the Men’s Section has successfully supported this campaign. The Men’s 2nd XI are in Hampshire Division 5 for the second year after successive promotions in 2012/13 (Hampshire Division 7) and 2013/14 (Hampshire Division 6). The Men’s 3rd XI, who were prompted to Hampshire Division 9 in 2012/13, were runaway champions in 2014/15 to earn promotion to Hampshire Division 8. Amazingly, due to surging numbers, for the 2015/16 Season the Club has entered a Men’s 4th XI team in Hampshire Division 10. This is a monumental year in the Club’s history as it is the first season we have four Men’s teams competing in the Hockey League. The 4th XI are supported by seasoned experience from the 2nd XI and 3rd XI. This move allows some of our junior members to commence their Men’s Hockey careers.

The Juniors have had tremendous success; the Club continues to expand its thriving Mini’s Section and competes at U12s, U14s and U16s Boys and Girls Hockey. The Girls’ Section is particularly strong in talent and numbers. As we start the 2015/16 season we aim to maintain the momentum and see many, if not all, juniors move on to play Men’s and Ladies’ Hockey if they wish.

The Committee, supported by both senior and juniors players, continue to provide a sound basis for the Club. Sensible decision making, coupled with energy and commitment, enable the Club to move forward.

In the summer of 2015 the Club supported the local Ganger Farm Development for Council approval. The club actively lobbied the local Council in conjunction with the developers to see an unanimous verdict in favour of the development. The planned work, starting in 2016, is for a new artificial hockey pitch & club house as well as other sports facilities. These new facilities, together with those of Romsey School, provide an infrastructure for the Club to grow.

There is a steady flow of members looking to take up umpiring qualifications which mutually benefits the individuals and the Club. We are now looking to expand our coaching roles, under our Director of Coaching, to ensure we have both Level 1 and Level 2 Coach Certification. This will ensure we have a structure to develop players’ skills and abilities.

The Club has rounded itself to be a truly mixed community. The Mixed Summer Hockey, our annual Hockey Club Ball in May and our Christmas curry events really demonstrate this. To top off the 2014/15 Season we even entered two teams into the Mixed Festival at Basingstoke which was a real highlight and showed the diverse way our Club has developed.

We continue to maintain our links with The Romsey School, and with the revised website also now in operation I hope you sign up for the 2015/16 season and enjoy memorable performances on the pitch that you can read about in The Romsey Advertiser! A big thank you to the budding report writers we have in all our teams.

Here’s to the Romsey success in 2015/16 and beyond…
