The u14 girls had a super first match back post 2nd lock down, a cold crisp but sunny day saw them start very brightly and take the game to Winchester and soon they got their reward with a nicely taken goal from Isla on her debut for the u14s.
Winchester came back well and the rest of the half was far more even and both teams playing well and just before the half Winchester pinched an equaliser.
Romsey came out in the second half and although they had many players playing out of position their teamwork and attitude was first class! They had moved up a gear and the forward and midfield press was too much for Winchester to contain.
Four excellent second half goals followed from Immi x2 , Zoe and Harriet to cap off a fine team display.
A great effort all round girls well done!
Player of the match – Isla , a super debut in midfield.
Mention in dispatches – Isobel L & Hattie K , playing out of usual positions making it look easy! well done.
U12 Girls Hat-Trick Win against Winchester
On a cold crisp morning Romsey U12 Girls travelled to Winchester.
The team looked strong from the outset with nearly the entire first third being played in the Winchester half. Fantastic attacking runs and crosses coming from Elsie on the right wing supported by Caitlin saw a few chances on goal, all frustrated by excellent saves from the Winchester keeper.
The second third opened with more fast paced runs followed by accurate crossing from Hannah that forced errors in the Winchester defence creating opportunities for Camilla and Grace. Finally Clara picked out Grace with a laser accurate pass from midfield, Grace then beat a Winchester defender and the goalkeeper to open the scoring tally.
The last third of the game opened with Grace’s second, calmly scored from a rebounded save. As the team began to tire Winchester managed a few attacking runs into the Romsey half, all of which were quickly shut down and cleared by some great defensive team work, special mention to Clara and Maya for cool heads under pressure. Grace completed her hat-trick having been fed by a great pass from Caitlin. A final chance from a Winchester short corner was quickly smothered and cleared by some fantastic defensive team work.
A real team effort from everyone today, well done girls!
Super Away Day Draw for u16 Girls!
The u16 Girls gave the travelling support something to cheer with a great 2-2 draw which had everything, super defending , great attacking and an excellent debut performance by the keeper Ellie G
Hannah P got the show on the road with a well worked and practiced short corner which she struck sweetly to give the keeper no chance.
Fleet drew level just before half time , this did not stop the girls pushing on though and they grabbed another midway through the second half with a lovey front to back move and super reverse stick finish from Amelia B.
Fleet kept going and despite a string of saves and super defending got their equaliser with 10 mins to spare.
A super draw for both teams after a thoroughly entertaining match and a real Romsey team performance to be proud of.
Player of the match – Hannah P ,super defending and well struck goal.
Battling U16 girl’s performance earns huge praise!
U16 girls played Petersfield on Sunday the 18th of Oct at Romsey school.
They were facing a very strong Petersfield team and spent most of the first half with their backs to the wall. It has to be said it was some of the most resolute defending I have witnessed from a junior team.
The girls almost made it to half time with honours even but with two minutes to go Petersfield made an attack count and scored!
The girls came out for the second half and gave it a really good go and pulled a goal back within the first 10 mins , a lovey finish from Evelyn!
Romsey were on top and a cry from the Petersfield coach could be heard” They want it more”
Romsey had a couple of other near misses and put everything into the first 20 mins of the second half but eventually Petersfield got on top and scored several goals towards the end of the match.
This did not dampen spirits as the girls knew they had given their best and warranted huge praise.
On a sad note unfortunately Charlotte R had a nasty injury which will see her laid up for a while, but the team all wish her a speedy recovery!
Player of the match – Hannah P , a captain’s performance in defence!
U14 girls back with a bang!
U14 girls stunned Petersfield with a faultless performance scoring 11 goals and conceding none!
Right from the start they hungry for the ball and did not give their opponents time to dwell ,the goals were shared around the team but there were two hattrick’s one for Imogen Ackerman and one for Rosie Brook.
When Petersfield had their chances Romsey’s defence had remained disciplined and snuffed out any chances and if they got through Ellie was there to save or kick away.
A truly dominant performance which Petersfield had no answer for.
Player of the match -Imogen Ackerman, precise goal scoring!

U16Bs share the spoils in Petersfield
This was an evenly fought match with both sides earning the well deserved draw.
The opposition started strongly with much of the early possession which led to two early goals. Romsey’s response was immediate. They attacked with vigour and finally got their reward late in the half. Lorne played a long ball from his own half to Tom who controlled with one touch and smashed the ball home and soon it was two. Jack M dribbled into the D and laid off to Ben who struck the ball home.
The second half was end to end stuff with Ollie making two fine saves and the defence of Will, Owen and Barry standing firm time and time again.
Late in the half Petersfield again scored two in the space of two attacks but that had the usual effect when Romsey, playing with the bare eleven stepping up another gear. Jack S created two chances before playing a lovely ball into Ellison, he nudged on to Lorne who neatly stabbed home.
Next it was Harry winning the ball in his own half and playing up to Ben, he danced into the D before being fouled to the ground . From a short corner Ben was fouled again, this time being awarded a penalty flick, that he coolly converted.
M4s make sure of the win when the cavalry arrive!
Romsey Mens 4s chalked up their first win if the season after a narrow defeat and draw from their first two matches in what has to be one of the strongest results to be predicted as the game started.
With Romsey’s Goalkeeper running 1/2 hour late and other players not able to make the start Romsey started with nine players and no GK!
Alton took advantage of the lack of a Keeper by firing in long passes in to the Romsey circle, but a couple of deflections went wide and a couple of penalty corners were defended brilliantly with Simeon Field running out and blocking, Pete OHara likewise and then Tom W cleaning up.
With Mike Pooley holding the ball up well with support from Ellison B, Romsey then won a penalty corner. A strong push out from Tom M to Colin Harwood saw the Alton defence rush out and a deft slip left was the executed for 1-0 by Tom W.
So the nine men were ahead, and they hold their lead with Duncan Sanders arriving late to bring them up to ten, and soon after a long ball played from Tom W through to the forwards was chased by Ellison B, and as the Alton keeper left it, it hit the post and Ellison reacting quickest to control the ball and make it 2-0.
Then with still only ten men on the pitch, Romsey pushed forward and Tom W played in Colin H who controlled the ball and pushed it past the keeper for an amazing 3-0 score line.
As Alton pushed for a goal Nick Cooper and Phil Orak made the left side of the pitch their own and with Tom M and Ellison B playing superbly in the centre and bringing in Simeon F, Romsey kept the ball until Lukasz Suleja arrived with his Kit to go in goal and Romsey finished the half 3-0 up and with 11 players.
In the second half the defence stood firm, Duncan S sweeping up and Lukasz S hitting away a couple of chances as Romsey held their lead, and then a long ball breakaway was touched on by Ellison B to Colin H to smash home for 4-0.
Despite an Alton consolation to make it 4-1 final score the rather tired Romsey team celebrated three points that seemed unlikely at push back
U12Gs compete well against Petersfield
The Romsey U12 girls played their first match on a full pitch and faced a strong Petersfield team.
The first third showed the teams were evenly matched, with Maya and Clara setting the standard for a strong defence which remained throughout the game. Elsie on the right wing had a strong run taking the ball up for Caitlin in midfield to put pressure on the Petersfield defence and spotting a space, passed beautifully to Grace who finished off with a confident goal giving Romsey an early lead. Petersfield equalised in the last few minutes of the third.
The second third started with the girls mixing up their positions due to injuries. With Rosie dropping back to midfield, she intercepted many passes and with Sophie quickly clearing balls out to the sides. Phoebe did well on the left wing this being her first hockey match – she keep her head up looking for spaces, finding Camila and Maggie who were ready to push forward but were met with a strong defence. Meanwhile, Petersfield pushed forward and scored a second goal.
In the final third, Petersfield continued to put on the pressure. Romsey girls stayed on their toes and Anna on the left back, who was up against a strong forward from Petersfield, showed huge resilience, and just didn’t give up, going in for tackle after tackle. Elise and Maya backed her up, with Clara making strong clearing passes to the wings. Petersfield sealed their win with a third goal, making it past Daisy in goal who was so strong, saving many attempts which would have left a very different score.
L1s focus on beating Andover
Romsey Vs Andover
(Result 2:0)
On Saturday 10th October, a very focused Romsey Ladies 1s hosted Andover at home.
Romsey started the match on the back foot with heavy dominant play from an energised Andover.Despite Romsey conceding a few short corners, in quick succession, no goals were conceded by Romsey, thanks to the composure of the defense: Orak, Shoebridge, Jones, Slade and Braund.
A well organised and confident Romsey then proceeded to dominant the game. Fantastic movement off the ball and passages of play between Knights, Collins and Beeching led to Romsey winning one of several short corners. From Collins’ powerful push, Jenner calmly lifted the ball into the corner and scored her well-deserved first goal of the season.
After a positive half time team talk, Romsey were eager for more goals. The 2nd goal came from Jenner’s formidable pass into the D, which Olingschlaeger deflected past their goalkeeper. Great goal!
Throughout the match Romsey played intelligently, moving the ball well and changing the channel to make more meaningful attacks.
Consistant and relentless attacks came from Bouchard, Brown and Dunford, earning Dunford ‘player of the match’.
Everyone went above and beyond and Luckhurst’s rapid reactions in goal enabled Romsey to keep a clean sheet.
A well-earned 3 points for a supportive and friendly team on and off the pitch. Roll on next Saturday!
L4s Gallop to Gosport
Gosport vs. Romsey 4 Ladies – Saturday 10.10.20 Final Score 4:1
It was a lovely morning for a trip down the M27 to the first away game of the season. Masked up, windows down the Fab Fours’ made their way to a sunny Gosport towards a well-organized COVID friendly welcome, and onto a pitch GB Hockey would be envious of.
Captain Coops reprised last week’s side with Able Ackerman joining for the first time. With a solid warm up completed the Fab Fours’ were poised like a stable of elite race horses. With the whistle blown and push back belonging to the Fours, Heroic Hunter slapped it towards Brilliant Berendsen junior who as always demonstrated smart stick skills to push forward. Gosport were quick on the uptake and on top of Romsey, Brilliant Berendsen junior anticipating their moves tipped the ball to Berendsen senior whose perfect position on the left wing allowed Romsey to gain some ground towards the D. A square ball saw Lively Legg take up the attack, supported by an ever Capable Captain Coops, who switched the ball to Persistent Procter perfectly placed to the side of the D. Maverick Macintosh took up position by the post and was unlucky not to have scored a goal but did manage to surreptitiously get it on Gosport’s feet. Persistent Procter injected the ball to Lippy Lu, who passed it to Heroic Hunter, who generously set it up for Able Ackerman to score a beautiful goal.
Gosport responded with a fast and furious attacking game with some outstanding play, particularly from their two forwards who outplayed and outran Romsey during parts of the match. Brilliant Berendsen junior took a hard fast ball to the thigh, but bravely came back on for the 2nd half of the match. Able Ackerman provided steadfast support to Lively Legg and Heroic Hunter who were able to push forward. Capable Coops and Berendsen Senior were not to be messed with, and were tenacious in the defense and capture of the ball. Maverick Macintosh made a nuisance of herself with Gosport defense popping out of nowhere to steal a ball under their control.
Romsey defense was in epic form with Fabulous French, Legendary Fiesty Field and Wiley Wisey supporting Outstanding O’hara, who saved more goals than went in. Fiesty Field committed the whole game to collecting the ball at speed and taking the 16s before Gosport had the opportunity to set up; a tactic that stood the defensive line in good stead. Fabulous French was all over the back line, preventing Gosport from having the opportunity to strike. Wiley Wisey put persistent pressure on the attack side forcing errors on their part and effectively clearing the ball for the mid-field to run up towards the goal.
The second half saw Gosport score 3 more goals. Romsey were unlucky not to have scored at least 2 more. The 2nd half saw a more disciplined Fab Fours’ side, with the team using more of the width and conceding fewer balls to Gosport. There was good marking of space and sticks were down on the ground. Despite the loss, the 4s felt it was a fun game.
As Kahil Gibran kinda said “Forget not that the earth delights to feel your hockey sticks and the winds long to play with your hair as you gallop down the pitch”. Next week is another game and chance for a win!
